We are living in a Critical Moment.
The crises facing us are numerous: ecological collapse, a new gilded age, an economy that has abandoned the working class, state-sponsored violence against immigrants, the rise of technofeudalism, genocide funded by our taxes, and so many other horrors.
It’s hard to face all this without falling apart, or turning a blind eye.
But it’s also not enough to simply witness these things, and to have the right opinions about them. We need skills for staying grounded while confronting these issues. It’s not enough to be on the right side of history. We have a moral duty to win.
We are living in the critical moment. Despite our memories of the past, and our expectations for the future, the present moment is all we have. Learning how to live in this moment is an indispensable skill for anyone trying to correct the course of history.
Liberation is an endeavor that requires more than confrontation, it also requires construction. I think that means being serious about letting our politics change us. It means building a new culture based on our values: one that emphasizes reciprocity, mutual aid, and learning how to treat each other differently than capitalism has taught us to.
The goal of this project is to empower people who are rising to the occasion of this critical moment. I want to teach you the techniques of meditation and contemplation so that you can organize your communities from a place of stability, confidence, and resilience; so that you can see the world and its problems with clarity and without bias; and so that you can notice the ways society has socialized you, and become more in tune with your core values.
A future where we win starts now, in the critical moment.
Read the Introduction
"If the world is to be healed through human efforts, I am convinced that it will be by ordinary people, people whose love for this life is even greater than their fear."
— Joanna Macy
My Background
I started my own meditation practice a little over 2 years ago. At the time I was paralyzed by anxiety about the state of our world, to the extent that I gave up on political organizing.
It's not that I didn't want to organize, or that I didn't see any value to it. I wanted to hide from my worries, and showing up felt like admitting to myself that the world was ending.
Building a meditation practice helped me live with my anxiety without being ruled by it. It helped me return to organizing with confidence of mind and clarity of vision. Once I had experienced the transformative benefits of a mindfulness meditation practice, I realized it was something I wanted to share with other organizers.
Thus, the Critical Moment was born.
